2. About the Story
Anton Chekhov’s short story “A Day in the Country” captures a brief yet powerful episode in the lives of two poor children, Danilka and Fyokla, and a kind shoemaker named Terenty. The story is set on a summer day in the Russian countryside, just before a storm.
The children, especially little Fyokla, are in distress because Danilka has his hand stuck in a tree hole. Fyokla runs to get help, and she finds Terenty, a homeless shoemaker with a generous heart. He not only helps free Danilka but also spends time with the children, sharing his knowledge about nature and life.
The story beautifully shows how compassion and simple acts of kindness can bring comfort and healing. It also highlights the gentle beauty of the countryside as a place of refuge from hardship.
